Art of Arab-American literature Week 4
Bayoumi brings to light several issues in his writings that arab-americans were and continue to face in modern times. I also found it interesting that Bayoumi also brings up issues prevalent between different groups of Arab americans. It seems as though most communities in the United States of America. However sometimes there are different disagreements between muslim and non muslim Arab Americans. Sometimes it can be seen that these two groups are a world apart from each other since their cultures may differ in many ways. However all arab americans were subject to profiling in the United States of America especially after events such as the wars in the Middle East and 9/11.
This harassment could differ from civilians or law enforcement and other government officials. Many incidents occurred at customs offices and other official government installments such as DMVs. After 9/11 many arab-americans were subject to speculation regarding their daily whereabouts and origins of their names. On more extreme scales, events such as being stalked by federal employees in their own houses was not an uncommon occurrence. Some were subject to being surveyed for several days on end for no apparent reason. Many more political arab-americans were subject to extreme measures such as phone tapping or being followed.
This subjugation has been prevalent since the tragic events of 9/11 affecting a wide pool of people who had nothing to do with these events. Seeing as how Arabs have been living in the U.S since the turn of the 1900s it is just strange to see such a change in perspective due to the events that transpired at the World Trade center. Subsequently non-Arab Americans such as Indian and Pakistani Americans were also subject to scrutiny due to the public perception of the two ethno-religious groups having a similar appearance. -(304)
